What makes someone coachable?  In my experience, it’s the willingness to grow. 

Coaching is not a comfortable journey – it is challenging, confronting, and life changing all at the same time.  Not everyone is up for it. 

Breaking out of a comfort zone carries fears and beliefs that will be triggered and need to be challenged.  It’s the same with receiving feedback from others – it can push up our defences and activate resistance. 

While staying in a  comfort zone gives a sense of safety and security, it offers no growth in the long term.  We fall asleep at the wheel and become complacent, able to do our work with our eyes closed and more interested in keeping the status quo.

Our World is Changing

Our world is ever changing and evolving.  And as leaders, we must evolve with it.

Ten years ago, coaching was seen more as a remedial exercise.  The idea being that someone need to be ‘fixed’.  High performers didn’t need coaching as they were, well ‘high achievers’!

It’s different nowadays.  Coaching is seen as an effective tool for self-development and not only that, but our next generation of our leaders, our millennials are actively seeking opportunities to grow.  They value coaching as a tool to help them succeed. 

Open to Possibility

Coaching is about being open to possibility and the desire to be a better leader and person.

We can learn from everyone and every situation if we are open minded and willing to take responsibility for our growth and development.  Nuggets of gold can come from anywhere if we’re receptive to seeing them.

Johari Window

In this context, one tool that I find helpful is the Johari window – it’s an oldie but still a goodie.  Developed by two psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham, it explores self-awareness in four windows.  In essence, it’s what others know about you that you don’t know yourself.

The first window is the what is known to me and what I willingly share with others.

The next quadrant are things that others know about me, but I do not know about myself -my blind spot.  Here we can proactively seek feedback to help us grow.  Feedback can of course, be both helpful and harmful so we must discern what to take on.

In the ‘hidden’ quadrant, there are things we know about ourselves but choose not to reveal to others.  This quadrant expands as trust is built up and we we’re willing to open into our vulnerability and share more about us.  .

And the last quadrant is both unknown to me and unknown to others.  It’s the unconscious where untapped potential exists.  This is the place of self-discovery and the possibility to uncover hidden talents.

Some people resist getting feedback. 

Some people resist opening up and sharing more of who they are for fear of judgement.

And some people resist both.

And yet our path as leaders is to expand our potential in all windows.

Being Coachable …

Is the raw desire to be a better leader, to grow as a person, to work on yourself, to become more self-aware of who you are, what you stand for and your impact on others.  To tap into your inner wisdom, your strengths and talents and get results. 

It’s the passion to really want to grow and make a difference to the people and the world around you. 

It’s inner fire that propels you forward.

Being coachable is the desire to take responsibility for your growth, to learn, to improve, to be a better leader and person; to achieve bigger goals, epic dreams and to contribute in more meaningful ways. 

It’s the willingness to grow and be open to possibility.
